Donald L. Carcieri was inaugurated as Governor of Rhode Island on January 7, 2003. He is a native of East Greenwich, RI, where he and his wife, Sue, live today. After graduating from Brown University, he taught for several years as a math teacher at public schools in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. After teaching, he joined Old Stone Bank, where he rose to the position of Executive Vice President. After ten years at the bank, he and his family moved to Kingston, Jamaica for two years, where Don headed the Catholic Relief Service’s West Indies operation, while Sue taught science in the local school.

In 1983, he started as the president of a small, start-up company in Rhode Island owned by Cookson. He eventually worked his way up to the position of Chief Executive Officer of Cookson America and Joint Managing Director of Cookson Group Worldwide. In his time at the helm of Cookson, he brought the company from $300 million in sales to over $3 billion. Don and Sue have 4 children and 13 grandchildren.
